Chicago is opening warming centers as temperatures plummet, providing safe spaces for residents during the extreme cold snap.
Chicago: The city is opening six warming centers from Monday to Wednesday. With temperatures dropping into the single digits, these centers will be a lifesaver.
They’ll be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Some libraries and other municipal buildings might also serve as warming spots, but their hours can vary. If someone needs a place to stay, the Garfield Community Service Center is open 24/7.
On Monday, expect a high of 19 and a low of 9, with wind chills hitting minus 4 overnight. Tuesday won’t be much better, with highs around 17 and lows of 8, and wind chills dropping to minus 5.
Things should warm up a bit later in the week, with sunny skies and temperatures reaching the mid-30s by Thursday and Friday. But don’t get too comfy; rain and snow are on the way after that.
A cold front is moving in, so be careful out there. The melted snow could freeze again, making roads slick. Tomorrow morning, we’ll see those sub-zero wind chills, so bundle up!
