A winter storm is brewing, bringing light snow to parts of Kansas and surrounding areas later this week

Wichita: A weather system is moving in from the west, bringing some snow to eastern Colorado. This is affecting places like Denver, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo. The snow is trying to push east along the Kansas-Colorado border and into the Oklahoma Panhandle.
Thanks to high pressure in our area, most of the heavier snow will stay to the west. If we do see any accumulation along the state line, it’ll be pretty light—maybe just a trace to an inch at most. This system will slide southwest, and any snow should taper off by this evening.
As for tonight, it’s going to be pretty chilly again. Expect temperatures to drop below zero in the higher snow-covered areas. Other spots will see lows in the single digits and low teens, with skies clearing up.
On Wednesday, we might warm up a bit, but it’ll be tough to gain much heat over the thick snowpack. Western Kansas will feel a bit milder, but overall, temperatures will still be below average.
A more powerful storm system is set to roll in from Thursday into Friday. If you’re traveling to or from the Dallas area, keep an eye on this. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for that region, along with parts of Southeast Oklahoma, Arkansas, and even a bit of Louisiana and Tennessee. Ice and heavy snow are expected there.
Kansas will be on the northern edge of this system, so we can expect some flurries and light snow. Accumulations will be minor, with a slight chance of more snow east of the Turnpike. Wichita might see some flurries starting late Thursday into early Friday morning, but temperatures will only drop a few degrees.
This weekend, we’ll keep trying to warm up, but the snowpack will make it tough. Expect more clouds than sunshine, and there’s a chance for a sprinkle or flurry as a weak system moves through.
According to Chief Meteorologist Lisa Teachman, here’s the forecast for Wichita: Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low of 3 degrees and winds from the north. Tomorrow, expect a high of 26 degrees with partly cloudy skies.
Looking ahead, Thursday will see a high of 33 and a low of 21 with a 20% chance of snow. Friday will be mostly cloudy with a high of 31 and a low of 15. The weekend will bring highs in the mid-30s and lows in the teens, with more clouds than sun.
Stay warm out there!
