Pat Suter, a beloved environmentalist from Corpus Christi, has passed away at 98, leaving a lasting legacy in conservation and education.
She and her husband, Hans, were passionate environmentalists. They worked hard to protect the area along Ennis Joslin Road from development. In 1986, they helped improve 22 acres along the Cayo del Oso, adding an 800-foot boardwalk and a long trail for hiking and biking.
Originally named the Hans A. Suter Wildlife Area, it was renamed the Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge in 2011. Pat was also a chemistry professor at Del Mar College for 26 years and was active in many nonprofits, including the Coastal Bend Sierra Club and the Audubon Outdoor Club.
Linda Fuiman, from the Coastal Bend Audubon Society, shared how Pat’s impact on the community, especially in birding and conservation, will always be remembered. They met in the early ’90s and quickly became friends, united by their love for nature.
A celebration of Pat’s life is set for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19, at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel. Her family asks that donations be made to a charity of choice instead of flowers.
