Ivor Nicholas, a beloved photographer and chronicler of Cumbria, has passed away at the age of 93, leaving behind a rich legacy of images.
Cockermouth: Ivor Nicholas, a well-known photographer from west Cumbria, has sadly passed away at 93. His family described him as a true newsman who dedicated his life to capturing the essence of Cumbria.
For decades, Ivor worked as a photojournalist, building an impressive archive of around 25,000 negatives. He recorded countless moments in the county’s history, making him a key figure in preserving its legacy.
Music was a big part of Ivor’s life. He started piano lessons at a young age and even played in concerts to support the war effort. His love for music continued throughout his education, where he excelled at St Bees School.
But photography was his true passion. Ivor got his first camera from his parents while still in school, and it sparked a lifelong love for capturing images. He met his wife, Dorothy, when they were teenagers, and they shared a beautiful life together.
After serving in the RAF as a photographer, Ivor returned home and married Dorothy in 1956. They built a happy life together, raising two children and enjoying their time in the great outdoors.
Ivor’s career took off when he covered the 1956 Sellafield accident, which put him in the spotlight of news photography. He believed strongly in the freedom of the press and was a lifelong member of the National Union of Journalists.
His home was a bustling hub of creativity, with a darkroom where his children and grandchildren loved to watch him develop photos. Ivor also freelanced for Border TV, where he formed lasting friendships and continued to grow as a photographer.
In the 1980s, Ivor embraced new technology, digitizing his extensive collection of photographs. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sharing his love for the fells and photography with them.
Throughout his life, Ivor published several books with local businessman Gerard Richardson, showcasing the rich history of the area. He leaves behind a loving family and a legacy that will be cherished for generations.
