Menomonee Valley: Exciting changes are coming to a former coal storage site. This year, work will kick off to transform the 15-acre Kneeland Properties area into a commercial hub.

Located between West Mt. Vernon Avenue and the Menomonee River, this site has been dormant for nearly a century. The city owns about 10 acres, while 5 acres are under the High Rise Bridge, owned by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

To help fund the project, the city received a $500,000 federal grant. This will go towards extending Mount Vernon Avenue and making other improvements. It’s a nice boost, especially since they got a $3.2 million federal grant last year.

Plus, the Common Council and Mayor Cavalier Johnson approved an additional $1 million in funding this year. This money comes from a tax district that benefits from the nearby Harley-Davidson Museum.

Benji Timm, the project manager, mentioned that contractors will be hired soon for the road extension and other work, which is expected to wrap up by 2026. There’s already a lot of buzz from developers interested in the site, which city officials see as a great spot for light industrial buildings.

It’s pretty cool to see this area getting a new lease on life after being a coal storage yard for so long. Exciting times ahead!
