Asotin: After years of planning, the new jail in Asotin County is almost ready to welcome its first inmates this spring. Construction crews are busy wrapping up the final touches on the building located along Sixth Avenue in Clarkston Heights.

They’re aiming for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and public tours by late April. While the project faced some bumps along the way, like pandemic delays and weather issues, it’s finally coming together. The new facility may not win any beauty contests, but it’s set to have some serious upgrades inside compared to the old jail.

Sheriff John Hildebrand is excited about the improvements. He believes the new environment will be a game-changer for both staff and inmates. The Kenaston-Leone & Keeble Group from Lewiston is managing the project, with help from Florida architects and local consultant Jerry Brotnov.

Brotnov thinks this project is just what Asotin County needs. It’s cost-effective and a great fit for the community. Roger Spaulding, the project superintendent, mentioned that this is his first jail construction, and he’s impressed with the security features.

Law enforcement has been discussing the need for a new jail for years. The current facility, built in the 1980s, just doesn’t cut it anymore. Once the new jail opens, Clarkston will decide what to do with the old one.

It’s about five miles from the courthouse, which means Clarkston police will have to drive a bit further for arrests. There was a chance to build the new jail closer to downtown, but that idea didn’t go through.

Looking ahead, Commissioner Chuck Whitman is optimistic about the new facility. To help with funding, Asotin County plans to charge other agencies to house inmates. The public safety sales tax approved by voters in 2019 is also helping cover costs.

Whitman noted that the total cost of the jail is now around $20 million, but thanks to the sales tax, taxpayers won’t see any extra burdens. The new jail will have a commercial kitchen, more beds, and plenty of space for programs.

Hildebrand and his team are thrilled with the design, which allows for future expansion. They’re also excited about the new kitchen, which will provide fresh meals for inmates. The facility will include spaces for classes, attorney meetings, and staff training.

With lots of natural light and calming colors, the new jail aims to create a better atmosphere. The community’s support has been fantastic, and they hope to involve locals in some finishing touches.

Hildebrand is looking forward to the opening and encourages everyone to come out for the tours and ribbon-cutting. It’s a big step for the community, and they can’t wait to show it off.
