Louisville: Tonight, folks in Kentucky can catch a glimpse of the first full moon of 2025. This moon, called the “wolf moon,” is named for the wolves that were thought to howl more during January’s cold nights.

But that’s not all! Four planets—Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars—will also be visible. NASA says this kind of sighting doesn’t happen every day. Venus and Saturn will be super close together, which is pretty rare, and Mars will shine bright since it’s opposite the sun.

So, when can you see this full moon? Mark your calendars for January 13. The moon will rise around 5:26 p.m. in Louisville and will be at its brightest around midnight.

Now, about the weather—it’s looking a bit chilly and cloudy. The National Weather Service says temperatures could drop to around 12 degrees, but AccuWeather suggests there might be some clear skies later on.

The name “wolf moon” comes from the idea that wolves howl more in January when the ground is frosty. Native American tribes also had other names for this moon, like the Center Moon and the Hard Moon.

If you’re into stargazing, keep an eye out for some cool events this month. On January 13, the moon will pass in front of Mars, and on January 17-18, Venus and Saturn will be super close together. Plus, all month long, you can see four planets in the sky, which is a treat for skywatchers.

So grab a blanket, bundle up, and enjoy the show tonight!
