Philadelphia parents welcomed a rare snow day, enjoying winter fun with their kids despite limited snowfall

Philadelphia: Snow days are getting pretty rare these days. With not much snow falling lately and remote learning being the norm, it’s a big deal when schools actually call a snow day.
So, when the Philadelphia School District announced a snow day due to an incoming storm, it caught a lot of folks by surprise. The storm was expected to start early Monday and last into the night.
Superintendent Tony Watlington even encouraged families to enjoy the day together, saying it’s a great chance to make some winter memories while staying safe.
People seemed pretty happy about the announcement, especially since they got the news in advance. Dickinson Square Park was buzzing with families enjoying the snow, even if some sledders were a bit disappointed by the lack of snow.
Jerusha Paige, who brought her daughters to the park, joked about the sledding conditions. She said, “This is a terrible neighborhood for sledding, but they don’t know any different.” Her girls were just thrilled to have an extra day off from school.
Tom Cornell was also at the park with his daughter, Olivia. He mentioned how much fun they were having, even if the snow was just a light dusting. He had to juggle picking up his other kids from kindergarten but made sure Olivia got some time to play.
By 1 p.m., the snow measured just 1.8 inches at the airport, but that didn’t stop families from enjoying the day. Cornell shared how snow days are a rite of passage in the Northeast, and he was glad his kids could experience that joy.
However, students hoping for another day off were likely to be disappointed. The school district was already prepping to clear the snow and get back to business as usual.
