Authorities are set to search a Queens apartment where a building superintendent was discovered dead in garbage bags under a bed

The super, Jose “Rene” Portillo, was last seen going to collect overdue rent from a tenant. Surveillance footage shows him entering the apartment but never coming out. That’s just eerie, right?
His brother got worried and called the police, who found Portillo’s body when they showed up. A woman answered the door, and soon after, a man, likely the tenant, came back and led the cops to the bedroom. Both are now in custody for questioning.
What’s even more disturbing is that Portillo wasn’t dismembered but was found wrapped in two garbage bags. The Medical Examiner is working on figuring out how he died.
Neighbors described the tenants as problematic, often drinking too much and causing a ruckus. One neighbor said, “I thought they were friends,” referring to the relationship between Portillo and the tenants.
It’s a tough situation, and it sounds like there were signs of trouble. Overdue rent notices were piling up, and one former neighbor had some harsh words about the tenants. It’s just a sad story all around.
