Coalcoman: A 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook southwest Mexico on Sunday. Thankfully, there haven’t been any reports of injuries or damage so far.

The quake was centered about five miles from Coalcoman de Vazquez Pallares, a small town with around 20,000 residents. It struck at a depth of 53 miles, which is pretty deep.

President Claudia Sheinbaum took to social media to say that emergency services are on it. They’re starting their review protocols in Coalcoman to make sure everything’s okay.

People in Mexico City were on alert, waiting outside their homes after alarms went off. Mexico is known for its earthquakes, sitting on five tectonic plates, especially along the Pacific coast.

Looking back, a massive 8.1 quake in 1985 caused a lot of destruction and loss of life. More recently, a 7.1 quake in 2017 took 369 lives, mostly in the capital.

Interestingly, just last year, central Mexico experienced another quake right after a safety drill. It’s a reminder of how vulnerable the region is to these natural events.
