Terrill Haigler, known as Ya Fav Trashman, uses his new truck to clean up Philadelphia for MLK Day of Service, employing local youth in the process
He’s not just cleaning up; he’s also giving young men a chance to work, especially those coming back from incarceration. Haigler believes in tackling problems head-on without all the fuss. He’s all about community action and making a difference together.
For MLK Day of Service, he’s bringing his truck and crew to Roxborough to help clean up. On a chilly January day, he and his team hit the streets of North Philly, picking up trash that locals reported to him. They started at Fotterall Square, where they found mattresses and drywall dumped on the street.
Haigler sees the trash as a job opportunity. He’s got a 25-yard garbage truck that can hold a lot of waste, and he’s planning to expand his services to include dumpster pickups for local businesses. He bought the truck from a woman-owned company, using a state grant and donations from supporters.
His crew currently consists of four young men, and he hopes to hire more soon. They’re all under 25 and eager to learn. Haigler wants them to get their commercial driver’s licenses and build a career in this field.
The team faced some challenges, like a broken fuel gauge and a flat tire, but the community has been supportive, helping him get back on track quickly. Haigler is grateful for the local support, saying it’s essential for his mission to keep Philadelphia clean.
He’s open to competition, believing there’s enough work for everyone. His goal is to make Philadelphia a cleaner place, and he’s excited to lead the charge.
Looking ahead, Haigler plans to add logos of sponsors to his truck and aims to pick up 500 tons of trash this year. He’s asking for donations to help cover the costs of trash removal, making it a community effort.
On MLK Day, he invites everyone to join him from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help fill the truck. Just bring gloves and boots, and he’ll provide the rest. It’s a great way to give back and make a difference in the community.
