As TikTok’s potential ban looms, confusion reigns over what might happen next
The law says TikTok has to either sell its US operations or shut down. But it’s not clear what that means for users. Some say the app could still work, just without updates. Others think it might just go dark.
Last week, TikTok’s lawyer told the Supreme Court that the app would stop working if the law goes through. They’re even planning to redirect users to a website explaining the ban.
TikTok has been fighting this law for months, claiming it violates free speech. They had a hearing recently, but the judges didn’t seem too convinced.
There’s a chance the president could give a 90-day extension if there’s progress on a sale. But so far, no one seems interested in buying TikTok. Even Elon Musk hasn’t jumped in.
And then there’s Trump. He’s been all over the place with his stance on TikTok. He might try to broker a deal once he’s back in office, but it’s all speculation right now.
Some think he could just overturn the ban with an executive order, but that’s tricky since it’s a law. Plus, there’s talk of Biden’s team trying to figure something out, but they’re being pretty quiet about it.
