SUNY Delhi recently honored five outstanding alumni and staff for their achievements and contributions to the community
Delhi: The SUNY Delhi Alumni Association just honored five amazing alumni and staff for their incredible work and community service. The 2024 awardees include Dr. Hayley Murphy, Steven Whipple, Corin Zimmer, Barbara Sturdevant, and Robert Backus.
Dr. Hayley Murphy, who graduated in 1984, got the Distinguished Alumna Award for her impressive career in veterinary science. She’s the first female CEO of the Detroit Zoological Society, overseeing the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center. With over 30 years in animal welfare and conservation, she’s made quite a mark since earning her associate degree at SUNY Delhi.
Steven Whipple, a 1998 grad, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award for his support of SUNY Delhi’s programs while thriving in the golf course industry. He’s been the golf program manager at West Point since 2003 and is also the president of the New York State Turfgrass Association.
Corin Zimmer, who graduated in 2019, earned the Alumnus of Merit Award. He’s now the senior vice president of business development at Luck Grove and has started his own clothing line and web design company. He’s also involved in community initiatives like Toys for Tots.
Barbara Sturdevant and Robert Backus received Exemplary Service Awards for their combined 60 years at SUNY Delhi. Sturdevant, who retired in 2023, was a full professor and department chair, while Backus, who retired in 2024, was an athletic director and coach, leading teams to numerous championships.
The Alumni Association has been recognizing outstanding graduates and staff for 47 years, celebrating their contributions to the college and community.
