Efforts are being made to refloat boats stranded after severe flooding on the Bridgewater Canal
Lymm: The team managing the Bridgewater Canal is working on plans to refloat boats stuck in a drained section. This follows heavy rain that caused the canal to burst for the first time in over 50 years.
The breach happened near Dunham Massey, affecting a stretch of the canal. Local politicians, including councillor Graham Gowland and MP Esther McVey, visited the area to support the boaters impacted by the flooding.
Cllr Gowland mentioned they created an action plan to address immediate needs, ensuring everyone is safe. Now, the team is focusing on the next steps, including a repair strategy.
Peter Parkinson, the canal director, shared that they quickly responded to reports of the breach on January 1. They installed emergency stoplogs to isolate the affected area, which helped dewater about 3km of the canal and prevented further flooding.
They’ve been collaborating with local authorities and agencies to provide support, including alternative accommodation and essential services for those affected. They’re also planning to install dams to help refloat the stranded boats.
Next, they’ll monitor the stoplogs and the earth dam to ensure water retention and investigate what caused the embankment failure. If anyone needs help, they can reach out via email or phone.
Lastly, they’re asking the public to avoid the affected area and respect the closures for safety. Thanks for understanding!
