Lionsgate’s “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” leads the box office, while Robbie Williams’ “Better Man” disappoints with low ticket sales
January is usually a slow month for films, and with about 10 theaters closed in LA, it didn’t help much. “Den of Thieves 2” is a sequel to the 2018 heist flick and opened in 3,008 theaters.
Gerard Butler is back, and he seems to have found a January niche. His last film, “Plane,” did pretty well too. This sequel cost around $40 million to make, and audiences gave it a “B+” CinemaScore, even if the critics weren’t too thrilled.
On the flip side, the Robbie Williams biopic “Better Man” didn’t do so hot. It only made $1.1 million from 1,291 theaters. Instead of a traditional portrayal, they went with a CGI chimpanzee for the character. Talk about a unique choice!
Despite the low ticket sales, reviews for “Better Man” were decent. It was outperformed by “The Last Showgirl,” which made $1.5 million. Meanwhile, Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” continued to rake in the cash.
Overall, it looks like the box office is still holding strong with some familiar titles, while new releases are struggling to find their footing. Final numbers will be out soon, but it’s clear that “Pantera” is the weekend winner.
