Lake Erie faces dangerous conditions due to low water levels and ice, prompting warnings for small craft and potential dock damage.
Miller Ferry has been keeping an eye on things, and they’ve noticed the warning too. The winds from the southwest are causing this low cycle, which is making the water levels drop on the western side of the lake. Jacob Market from Miller Boat Line mentioned that the lake is frozen right now, so the ferry service is shut down. Not many small boats are around Port Clinton at the moment.
He said, “The bay is frozen, and the water is definitely down a little bit. Everything is frozen in.” It’s a bit concerning because the ice can create air pockets, and that can be dangerous for anyone walking on it.
Jacob also pointed out that when the ice shifts, it can really mess up docks. That’s why some folks use bubblers to keep the ice from forming around their dock pilings. It’s all about keeping things safe out there.
He added, “I’m sure there is open water out past Huron, but everything I can see in every direction is ice.” The National Weather Service is warning that strong winds will continue, and that could lead to even bigger waves. They’ve issued a Small Craft Advisory for certain areas until Wednesday morning.
As of early this morning, the water level at Toledo was just above the critical mark for safe navigation. But there’s a chance it could drop below that today. So, if you’re out on the lake, be careful and stay safe!
