New York City: Governor Kathy Hochul just announced that hundreds of NYPD officers will start patrolling overnight trains next week. This is part of her subway safety plan that many have been waiting for.

She mentioned that starting Monday, you’ll see officers on the trains. Each of the 150 overnight trains will have two officers on board when the plan is fully rolled out.

The state is putting $77 million into this six-month deployment. Hochul first shared this idea during her “State of the State” address but didn’t give many details at the time, which left people confused.

Now, she’s clarified a lot of that in her news conference at Grand Central. However, she still couldn’t confirm when the full 300 officers would be on every train from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Importantly, this plan won’t take officers away from their current subway duties. Hochul emphasized that this is not about diverting existing law enforcement resources. In addition to the train patrols, another 750 officers will be stationed at platforms and stations.
