Albany: Governor Kathleen C. Hochul has a new plan to protect more natural land in New York. She wants to expand parks in underserved areas and make it easier for the state to set up conservation easements.

In her upcoming State of the State address, she’ll share her vision for building more parks, especially in rural areas. She’s also looking to fund efforts to protect open spaces and farmland, making them more accessible for everyone, including those with disabilities.

Hochul’s plan includes changes to title insurance rules to help conservation groups acquire land more easily. She wants the Department of Environmental Conservation to have the power to secure conservation easements directly, rather than relying on private parties.

“I’m lucky to be governor of a state with amazing outdoor spaces, and I want to make them accessible to all New Yorkers,” Hochul said. She believes these efforts will preserve the environment and keep New York a great place for recreation and economic growth for future generations.

This initiative is part of her 2025 State of the State address, which sets the agenda for the year. After her speech, lawmakers will start negotiating legislation and working on the state budget, which is due by April 1.
