Lake County: On January 13, just before 7 p.m., a car hit a man waiting by his vehicle on U.S. 27. He was by a tow truck that was helping with a disabled car.

The tow truck was partially in the lane, and the passenger was directing traffic. Unfortunately, a passing car didn’t move over and struck the man, who then hit the tow truck’s mirror.

After the collision, the car sped off, turning onto Margaux Drive and hitting a decorative rock before fleeing south on U.S. 27. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities haven’t released his name yet but promise updates once they have more information. If anyone knows anything about this incident, they should contact the Florida Highway Patrol or Crimeline.

Witnesses described the car as a white Kia Soul with an Indiana license plate. The investigation is ongoing, and the driver remains unidentified.

The Florida Highway Patrol reminds everyone that leaving the scene of an accident is illegal. They also stress the importance of the new law requiring drivers to move over for stopped emergency vehicles and tow trucks.

In 2022, over 170 accidents happened because drivers didn’t move over, leading to more than 14,000 citations.

If you’re ever in a crash, stay calm, check on everyone, and call for help. It’s crucial to gather information and report the incident properly.

Stay safe out there and remember to follow the rules of the road.
