Destanee Aiava showcases vintage tennis outfits at the Australian Open, honoring past champions while making her mark in the tournament.
Aiava, who doesn’t have a clothing sponsor, made her own fashion statement by wearing replicas of iconic dresses from the late 2000s and early 2010s. She battled through three qualifying rounds to secure her spot in the main draw, showcasing her talent and style.
In her first qualifying match, she donned a light pink dress that Sharapova wore at the 2012 US Open. For her second match, she sported a pink and purple dress inspired by Ana Ivanovic’s 2010 US Open look.
As she advanced, Aiava continued to impress with her fashion choices. Before her main draw debut, she mentioned finding another dress on Facebook for just $35, which she considered a steal.
In the main draw, she wore a sky blue Adidas dress previously worn by Caroline Wozniacki at the 2013 US Open, marking her first Grand Slam main-draw win. This victory not only boosted her confidence but also provided her with the means to travel with her fiancé to future tournaments.
In her final match at the Australian Open, Aiava wore a replica of Sharapova’s 2011 French Open dress. She expressed gratitude for the support from a friend who lent her the outfit.
While Aiava hopes to secure a sponsor in the future, she’s enjoying the freedom to choose her outfits. She dreams of eventually wearing a piece from Serena Williams, although those are harder to find and pricier. It’s clear that Aiava is making her mark both on and off the court!
