The Delray Beach firefighter union is upset after the chief released names of firefighters involved in a recent Brightline train crash.
The firefighters on leave have a combined 77 years of experience. They include Assistant Chief Kevin Green, Division Chief Todd Lynch, Captain Brian Fiorey, and Driver Engineer David Wyatt. Wyatt was driving the fire truck when the crash occurred.
The union representing these firefighters is not happy about the chief releasing their names. They called the decision “reckless and irresponsible” in a Facebook post. They believe it undermines due process and could harm the department’s unity.
The crash happened when a Delray Beach ladder truck was crossing the tracks at East Atlantic Avenue and SE 1st Avenue. The city stated that administrative leave is standard procedure and not a punishment.
In response to the union’s concerns, Chief Ronald Martin emphasized his commitment to fairness and professionalism. He wants to ensure the safety of both firefighters and the community.
City Manager Terrence Moore backed the decision to release the names, saying it was necessary for transparency and public trust during the investigation.
