Eight talented Dallas ISD students showcased their skills in a heartfelt oratory competition honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
One fourth grader stood out, saying, “I am the dream. I have hope. I will aspire to be a trailblazer for justice.” It was a powerful moment.
Another fourth grader shared, “I am a future leader of my generation. I’m destined to become the person that Dr. King paved the way for me to be.”
The oratory competition, sponsored by Foley and Lardner LLP, is now in its 33rd year. Michael Newman, the office managing partner, mentioned that these eight students were chosen from nearly 100 participants.
Newman explained that the students start preparing in the fall, doing research and practicing their speeches for months. They even have in-school competitions and receive mentoring along the way.
One of the judges, Richie Butler, a pastor, was truly inspired by the kids. He said, “To watch a group of kids, who I believe are definitely the next generation, I feel confident we are in good hands when it comes to our future.”
Fourth grader Deon Harris, who hopes to win in the future, said, “It’s making me want to do more speeches and be like Dr. Martin Luther King and collaborate.”
This competition started in Dallas back in 1993 and has now expanded to Houston and Chicago, with over 270 students participating across the three cities.
