Detroit: On Monday, folks all over Michigan will come together to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. King was a key figure in the civil rights movement and visited Michigan several times during his life.

Even though he was tragically killed at just 39 in Memphis, Tennessee, his fight for justice and equality continues to inspire people across the country. This holiday is a reminder of his lasting impact.

In fact, it was in Detroit where King first shared parts of his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech during the Walk to Freedom back in 1963. He also preached at the Detroit Central Methodist Church, giving his last sermon there just two weeks before his assassination.

This year, the holiday coincides with Inauguration Day for President-elect Donald Trump, making it a significant day for many.

So, what’s happening in Michigan for MLK Jr. Day? There are several events lined up. In Traverse City, there’s a Day of Service & Song at the Alluvion, featuring art, music, and community activities.

Flint will host its annual Community Celebration at the public library, while Grand Rapids will have the 25th annual Corporate Breakfast at DeVos Place. Lansing is celebrating with a 40th annual Day of Celebration at the Lansing Center, and Marquette will have a Day of Service bracelet-making activity at Northern Michigan University.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and a leading civil rights activist. He delivered his famous speech to over 250,000 people during a march in Washington, D.C., in 1963. He was married to Coretta Scott King and had four kids.

Sadly, King was assassinated in 1968 by James Earl Ray. He was shot while standing on a balcony in Memphis and was pronounced dead shortly after. King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, and at just 35, he became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

MLK Jr. Day is a federal holiday, celebrated on the third Monday of January. It became a federal holiday in 1983, thanks to President Ronald Reagan signing the King Holiday Bill into law. However, it took 15 years of advocacy after King’s assassination for the holiday to be established.

So, as we honor MLK Jr. this Monday, let’s remember his incredible legacy and the ongoing fight for equality and justice.
