Washington: Social media went wild with jokes about Zane Gonzalez, the Commanders’ kicker, after his pre-kick routine caught everyone’s eye. But then people realized it was more than just a quirky habit; it was tied to his struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

During a recent game against the Buccaneers, Gonzalez’s unusual routine became a hot topic. He made a game-winning field goal, but not before the cameras caught him doing some odd things like touching his head and fiddling with his socks. NBC’s Mike Tirico even joked about it, saying it wasn’t the time for a “fashion malfunction.”

Gonzalez’s wife, Lizzy, wasn’t amused by the jokes and told the trolls to back off on TikTok. Zane himself, however, seems to take it in stride. He mentioned that he’s used to the attention and knows how it looks. He said, “It’s who I am, and it’s what I go through.”

He’s been dealing with questions about his OCD since he was drafted in 2017. Before his game-winning kick, he was seen repeatedly touching his head, which sparked more jokes online.

Gonzalez has had a solid career, setting records at Arizona State and being drafted by the Browns. After a couple of years there, he moved to the Cardinals and then the Panthers. He once shared that his OCD includes little habits, like rinsing his hands before kicks, which helps him feel more at ease.

After a few years away from the league, he’s back with the Commanders and ready to take on the Lions in the playoffs. It’s been quite a journey for him, and he’s learned to embrace who he is, quirks and all.
