Brooklyn: Alia Abdul-Raheem was just walking home when she got caught in a drive-by shooting. It was around 7 p.m. on Malcolm X Boulevard when she heard gunfire.

She saw a car zooming by with its windows down, and then, out of nowhere, she felt a sharp hit on her chest. Looking down, she noticed a hole in her coat and shirt. In shock, she hurried home, not realizing how serious it was at first.

When she got home, her sister opened her coat and saw the gash on her chest. Alia rushed to the emergency room, where doctors confirmed she was lucky—the bullet only grazed her.

Sadly, a 15-year-old boy was also shot during the same incident, but he was stable after being taken to the hospital.

Less than a day later, Alia was still sore and shaken. She’s lived in the area for eight years and never felt unsafe before. Now, she worries about her walks to the subway.

“It’s scary. I’m a bit shaken up,” she admitted. Alia believes the city needs to do more to keep guns away from young people.

“It was 7 o’clock on a Tuesday. If we had better gun control, this would have never happened,” she said. As of now, police are still investigating, and no arrests have been made.
