Forty firefighters from Alberta are heading to California to assist with the ongoing wildfires threatening communities near Los Angeles
Edmonton: So, here’s the scoop. Forty wildland firefighters from Alberta packed their bags and hit the road Monday morning. They’re off to California to help tackle those fierce wildfires around Los Angeles.
These two crews are expected to land in California in just a few days. The Alberta government had already announced this plan, and they’re sending along two agency reps too. Plus, they’re ready to send in water bombers and pilots if things get really hairy.
Minister of Forestry and Parks, Todd Loewen, mentioned that California helped Alberta during tough times in 2023. Now, it’s Alberta’s turn to lend a hand to their neighbors.
Alberta’s got a solid track record when it comes to fighting wildfires, and they’re all in to support their friends in the U.S. The California wildfire management agency will decide where the Alberta crew will be sent.
These crews have been heading to California every fall for over 30 years as part of a regular contract. It’s a long-standing partnership that really shows how communities can come together in tough times.
Sadly, the wildfires have already claimed at least 24 lives and destroyed thousands of homes. Right now, about 150,000 folks in Los Angeles County are under evacuation orders. It’s a tough situation, but help is on the way.
