An Australian nonprofit aims to provide 1,600 portable beds for Chicago’s homeless this winter, raising funds to support the initiative.

Chicago: An Australian nonprofit is on a mission to help the city’s homeless this winter. They’re raising funds to give out over 1,600 portable “backpack beds.”
Called Good Night Chicago, this initiative aims to raise $202,368 to provide 1,632 beds, each costing $124. So far, they’ve gathered more than $53,000.
The goal comes from a city survey showing 1,634 people living without shelter in 2024. Tony Clark, the founder, showed how these beds work at a press conference.
These backpack beds are lightweight, made from fire-retardant fabric, and can be used in all seasons. They even have insulation to keep users warm and safe.
Clark plans to team up with local groups like Casa Esperanza and St. Sabina Catholic Church to distribute the beds. Rev. Michael Pfleger emphasized the importance of this effort, saying it shows care for the homeless.
Dr. Diane Washington noted that these beds could reduce emergency room visits during the cold months. They help keep people warm and safe from frostbite.
