Honolulu: Mourners gathered at Punahou School to remember Hiram deFries-Saronitman, a 24-year-old pilot. He was known for his kindness and infectious smile, often described as the “good kine kolohe.”

Hiram and another pilot, Preston Kaluhiwa, tragically died in a plane crash on December 17. They were flying a Cessna 208 when they lost control shortly after takeoff from the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

Hiram graduated from Punahou in 2020 and had a passion for flying, earning his commercial pilot license earlier this year. His teacher, Kumu Kealohi Reppun, shared how he was a bright student who loved the Hawaiian language and had a great sense of humor.

The memorial included personal items that reflected his life, like his fishing boat, which symbolized his love for fishing and helping his community. Hiram was also an athlete, excelling in football and baseball during high school and later at Saddleback College in California.

He is survived by his parents, sisters, grandparents, and fiancée, leaving behind a legacy of joy and potential that many will miss deeply.
