Des Moines: The Des Moines International Airport has a bunch of non-stop flights, but many folks are hoping for even more options.

We recently asked readers about their dream destinations, and the results are in. Here’s what people really want to see added.

So, what are the top five cities Iowans are wishing for? Here they are:

  1. Cancun, Mexico: 1,900 votes
  2. Seattle, Washington: 1,814 votes
  3. Maui, Hawaii: 1,282 votes
  4. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: 1,111 votes
  5. New Orleans, Louisiana: 822 votes

Interestingly, the airport has never offered direct flights to any of these top five spots, according to Sarah Hoodjer, who handles communications and marketing.

There was one other popular request: Salt Lake City, Utah. It used to have flights on Delta, which helped connect travelers to other western routes.

Now, how does the airport get new routes? Well, the leaders are always chatting with airlines to expand options. But ultimately, it’s up to the airlines to decide.

When considering new routes, they look at a few key things: they need enough passengers to fill at least 80% of the seats, the availability of planes and crew, and the costs involved.

As for the most popular destinations from January to June 2024, the data isn’t fully in yet, but the airport recently hit a record with 33 non-stop routes. Allegiant and American Airlines have been adding new flights, which is exciting!

So, if you’re flying out of Des Moines, keep an eye out for those new routes. Who knows? Your dream destination might just be on the horizon!
