Wichita: On Monday, folks in Wichita came together to remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It was a day filled with reflection on his incredible legacy.

Denise Hightower shared her thoughts, saying, “This day means freedom to me. Freedom for all.” She was among the hundreds who gathered at the Hughes Metroplex for the event, which was organized by the greater Wichita Ministerial League.

The celebration included music, singing, and a video tribute to Dr. King. Jonathan Anderson, who attended, emphasized how important MLK is to the community. He noted that his work helped unite people and foster collaboration among different cultures.

Rabbi Andrew Pepperstone was also there, reminding everyone that civil rights are still a pressing issue today. He stressed the need to defend and expand these rights, as they are under threat across the country.

Civic leaders, including Wichita Mayor Lily Wu and police chief Joe Sullivan, joined the gathering. Hightower concluded by highlighting the importance of equality, hoping future generations will carry on Dr. King’s legacy of fairness for all.
