Washington: Whoopi Goldberg is stepping up for Carrie Underwood after she announced she’d perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration. On “The View,” Whoopi shared her thoughts on Underwood’s choice to sing “America the Beautiful” on January 20.
Goldberg said, “I stand behind her.” She believes everyone has the right to choose where they perform. Even if she personally won’t be watching, she respects Underwood’s decision.
However, co-host Joy Behar wasn’t on board. She questioned how Underwood could say she loves her country while supporting someone she views as harmful. Behar pointed out Trump’s past legal issues, calling him a “convicted felon.”
Despite their disagreement, Behar acknowledged the importance of free speech and wouldn’t tell Underwood not to perform. Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, who worked in the Trump administration, expressed hope that people could move past cancel culture.
Goldberg reiterated her support for Underwood, emphasizing that it’s okay to disagree. Underwood had announced her performance earlier, saying she felt humbled to be part of a moment that calls for unity.
She mentioned wanting to contribute to a spirit of togetherness and looking forward. Trump won the election against Kamala Harris, and the inauguration is set to be a significant event.
