Investigators are looking into various causes behind the deadly California wildfires
Los Angeles: The wildfires in California have been devastating, killing at least 16 people and destroying countless homes. Investigators are on the case, trying to figure out what sparked these massive blazes.
In upscale Pacific Palisades, where celebrities like Jamie Lee Curtis lost their homes, officials believe the fire started behind a house on Piedra Morada Drive. It’s a spot near a wooded area, which likely fueled the flames.
While lightning usually causes most fires, it was quickly ruled out here. There were no lightning strikes reported in the area when the Eaton Fire began. So, investigators are looking at other possibilities, like whether the fire was set intentionally or if utility lines played a role.
John Lentini, a fire expert, mentioned that they’ll focus on where the fire started and work from there. So far, there’s no evidence of arson or issues with utility lines being the cause.
Utilities must report any incidents that could be linked to wildfires. Southern California Edison has filed a report regarding the Eaton Fire, but they haven’t found any evidence that their equipment caused it. They’re just being cautious after getting requests from insurance lawyers.
Interestingly, while lightning and utility lines are common causes, other things like debris burning or even fireworks can start fires too. Accidents happen, and sometimes they lead to big disasters.
As of now, the Eaton and Palisades fires are still burning, with no rain in sight. The winds have calmed down a bit, but the dry conditions mean the fires could keep going until they run out of fuel.
Lentini noted that these fires will only stop when they have nothing left to burn or when the weather changes. It’s a tough situation, and everyone is hoping for some relief soon.
