Over 400 journalists at The Washington Post urge owner Jeff Bezos to restore trust and transparency amid leadership changes and staff departures

This all kicked off after Bezos stopped the paper from endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 election. Since then, a lot of top journalists have been leaving, and it’s causing quite a stir. The letter from the staffers said they’re alarmed by recent decisions that have made readers question the paper’s integrity.
They want to regain their competitive edge and rebuild trust. The staff is also not happy about the new CEO, Will Lewis, who’s trying to shift the paper’s focus. They feel like they need a clear vision to move forward and keep doing the journalism they believe in.
The letter even reminded Bezos of his own words from when he bought the paper, saying the values shouldn’t change. They’re hoping he’ll come in and chat with the leadership team to sort things out.
Since Lewis took over, the paper has seen a lot of changes, including layoffs and a drop in digital subscribers. It’s been a tough time, and the staff is feeling the pressure. They just want to get back to what they do best: holding power accountable and delivering the news.
