Virginia Beach is transforming a vacant lot into a vibrant public park for events and community gatherings

Virginia Beach: A new public park is on the way! It’s being built on a small piece of land between the Boardwalk and the Fishing Pier parking lot. Construction kicked off this week, and workers are already laying down pavers for a walking path.
This park, called 14th Street Park, will be a spot for special events, including live music. Erin Goldmeier from the city’s Convention & Visitors Bureau shared that it’s going to be a fun place for everyone.
The project is set to cost around $525,000, funded by the Tourism Investment Program. This program uses tax revenue from meals, hotel stays, and other local activities. The area used to host a carnival but has been empty for a while.
They’re planning to finish construction by mid-February. The park will have a concrete pad for entertainment, a walking path, and even handrails and steps. There’s a cool concept sketch that shows an event lawn, movable seating, and a native garden.
Plus, the path from the pier parking lot to the Boardwalk will stay open. In 2022, the Sibony family bought the Fishing Pier and its parking lot, but the city still owns the land for the new park.
Other parks in the area at 17th, 24th, and 31st streets also host festivals and free live music during the summer. It’s shaping up to be a great addition to the community!
