Charlottetown: So, there’s this wild story about a meteorite crashing right outside a guy’s house in Canada. A homeowner named Joe Velaidum was out walking his dog last July when he noticed some strange white debris on his lawn.

Curious, he checked his doorbell camera and saw this fast-moving object fall from the sky. It made a sound like ice breaking, which is pretty cool! He collected about seven grams of the debris and handed it over to researchers.

Turns out, it was indeed a meteorite! Chris Herd, a meteorite expert from the University of Alberta, said it’s likely the first time anyone has recorded the sound of a meteorite hitting the ground. How amazing is that?

After the initial find, Joe and Chris went back and found nearly 100 more grams of debris. They confirmed it was an ordinary chondrite meteorite, which is the most common type that hits Earth. But here’s the kicker: it’s the only meteorite known to have landed on Prince Edward Island!

Chris mentioned that the meteorite might have been damaged while bouncing around in an asteroid belt. By the time it hit the ground, it was traveling over 120 mph, which explains the shattering sound caught on camera.

Joe reflected on how he had been standing right where the meteorite landed just minutes before. He joked that if he had stayed there a bit longer, it could have been a real disaster for him!
