The winter of 1993-1994 saw record-breaking cold and heavy snowfall in Chillicothe, Ohio, leaving residents reminiscing about the harsh conditions.
On January 19, 1994, the Chillicothe Gazette had a wild headline about record lows. They reported a bone-chilling minus 29 degrees at Hopewell Culture Historical Park. That was a big deal, especially since the previous record was minus 21.
People were bundled up, scraping ice off their cars. Roger Martin, a local, was all about those hats and layers. He mentioned folks were craving an “old-fashioned winter,” and boy, did they get it!
That week, nine inches of snow fell, and it all started on a Sunday night. The Gazette even noted that businesses were closing up shop. Star Time Video was packed with people grabbing VHS tapes to hunker down with during the storm.
Not everyone was staying in, though. The donut shop on Bridge Street had a crowd of about 16 people enjoying coffee and chatting about the weather. Jim Strawer said he’d show up no matter what the weather was like.
It was a winter to remember, for sure!
