Ukraine launched significant drone and missile attacks deep in Russia, signaling a strong message as Trump prepares for his second term.

The strikes took place on January 13 and 14, hitting various industrial and military sites as far as 680 miles into Russia. Ukrainian officials pointed out that they targeted places in Bryansk, Saratov, and Tula, along with the Republic of Tatarstan.
One of the key targets was an oil refinery near Engels, which fuels strategic bombers. They also hit a chemical plant in Bryansk that supplies materials for missile systems. Russia’s defense ministry claimed the missiles used were some of the most advanced ones sent to Ukraine, including British/French Storm Shadow missiles and US ATACMS. They also mentioned that 146 drones were part of the operation.
In response, Russia launched its own drone and missile strikes targeting energy infrastructure in Ukraine. Both sides claimed to have intercepted most of the incoming missiles, but it’s hard to verify those claims.
This show of strength from Ukraine comes right before Trump’s inauguration. Trump has been critical of Ukraine’s actions, saying it’s crazy to send missiles into Russia and that it only escalates the conflict. He suggested that Ukraine might have to give up some territory in a peace deal.
Former UK foreign minister William Hague noted that both Ukraine and Russia are trying to position themselves for the new Trump administration. He pointed out that while Russia is trying to grab more territory, Ukraine is hitting back harder to secure its own positions.
As Trump’s inauguration approaches, the fighting has intensified. Ukraine is striking sites in Russia, while Russia is making gains on the front lines in eastern Ukraine, especially in the Kursk region where Ukraine still holds some territory.
