An Uber-led group is pushing for lower insurance costs for drivers in New York City and Albany through a major ad campaign
The group, called Citizens for Affordable Rates, is backing a bill that would cut the minimum liability coverage for taxi and ride-share drivers from $200,000 down to $50,000. This change is being pushed by Councilwoman Carmen De La Rosa, who represents a district with many for-hire drivers.
Uber is funding the coalition’s first ads, which will run on TV, digital platforms, and streaming services like Netflix and Hulu in New York City and Albany. The group points out that auto insurance in New York is nearly 40% higher than the national average, with drivers paying over $1,700 a year.
They’re also aiming to challenge the trial lawyers and insurance companies that benefit from the current system. The coalition highlights issues like fraudulent claims and staged car crashes, which they say account for a significant portion of insurance payouts in the state.
In addition to focusing on ride-share insurance, the group plans to address rising property and business insurance costs. They emphasize that low-income families are hit hardest by these high premiums.
Herb Regnier, from the Bangladeshi American Community Development and Youth Services, shared that rising costs are straining families and small businesses. He believes the coalition’s mission offers hope for a more affordable future in New York.
Nader Khader, from the WESPAC Foundation, echoed this sentiment, stating that it’s time to confront the special interests in Albany and ensure families aren’t pushed out of the metro area due to high costs.
