Juneau: So, Trump is back at it again, saying he wants to change Denali back to Mount McKinley. This isn’t the first time he’s brought it up. Back in 2015, Obama changed the name to Denali to honor Alaska Natives and what they wanted.

Now, Trump is saying it’s time to restore the name of McKinley, claiming he was a great president who helped the country. He even mentioned changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which is a bit of a stretch.

Alaska’s political leaders aren’t too thrilled about this idea. They pushed back hard when Trump suggested it before. Denali means “the high one” in Athabascan, and many folks in Alaska feel it’s a name that should stick.

The mountain is a big deal, standing at 20,310 feet, and it’s in Denali National Park. The name Mount McKinley was given back in 1896, but it wasn’t officially recognized until much later.

There’s been a long-standing tug-of-war between Alaska and Ohio over the name. Alaska has wanted to change it since the 70s, and it seems like this debate isn’t going away anytime soon.
