Trump aims to change Denali back to Mount McKinley, sparking debate over the name.
He’s saying it’s time to honor President McKinley, claiming he made the country rich. Trump even wants to change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Can you believe that?
Alaska’s congressional delegation hasn’t responded yet, but back in 2017, they were pretty against the idea of changing Denali back to Mount McKinley. Remember, Obama changed the name to Denali in 2015 to respect Alaska Natives and their traditions.
Denali means “the high one” in Athabascan, and it’s a stunning 20,310-foot mountain in Denali National Park. The name Mount McKinley was given by a prospector in 1896, but McKinley never even visited Alaska!
Trump brought this up again at a rally last year, saying McKinley was a great president and that his name shouldn’t have been taken off the mountain. Some folks, like Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, are not on board with this idea. She believes Denali is the name that truly represents the mountain’s heritage.
The Tanana Chiefs Conference, which represents several Athabascan tribes, has been pushing for Denali to be recognized for years. It’s a bit of a tug-of-war between Alaska and Ohio over this name, and it’s been going on since the 1970s.
