Trump plans to establish an ‘External Revenue Service’ to gather tariffs from foreign nations, aiming to boost U.S. revenue.

He shared this on his Truth Social account, comparing it to the IRS, which handles our domestic taxes. But here’s the kicker: setting up a new agency means Congress has to get involved, and right now, Republicans control both the House and Senate.
Now, it’s interesting because Trump has been all about shrinking the government. Yet, he’s looking to create a new agency that would take over tasks already done by places like the Commerce Department and Customs. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher, right?
He’s also got some big names on board for his Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. Billionaire Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy are leading the charge to cut federal jobs and regulations as part of Trump’s “Save America” plan for his next term.
Tariffs are a big part of Trump’s economic strategy, with potential levies of up to 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico, and a whopping 60% on stuff from China. Economists aren’t too thrilled about this, saying it’ll just end up costing consumers more and isn’t the best way to raise money.
Democrats are already pushing back hard against the External Revenue Service idea. Oregon Senator Ron Wyden called it a sneaky way to hike taxes on American families and small businesses while giving more breaks to the wealthy. It’s definitely heating up in the political arena!
