Florida: So, Trump recently gave a shout-out to Governor Ron DeSantis for his efforts on immigration. DeSantis is calling for a special session to tackle this issue, and Trump thinks other governors should jump on board too.

DeSantis is looking to push through some immigration reforms soon. He wants to make sure Florida is ready for the changes that might come with Trump’s presidency. He’s asking for more funding for law enforcement and other reforms, but some lawmakers think it’s a bit early for that.

Trump took to social media to thank DeSantis, hoping more governors will follow his lead. He’s got big plans for deportations once he takes office, and while some states are gearing up to fight back, Florida seems ready to support him.

DeSantis has already banned sanctuary cities in Florida but believes more needs to be done. He’s even suggested that local officials could be suspended if they don’t do their jobs regarding immigration. He hasn’t shared all the details yet, but he wants to repeal a law that lets undocumented students pay in-state tuition. He thinks that kind of thing encourages illegal immigration.

At a press conference, DeSantis said it’s important for Florida to be part of this fight. Meanwhile, blue states like California are preparing to push back against Trump’s plans, with California Democrats recently agreeing to spend $50 million to defend immigrants in court.

Even with a Republican supermajority in Florida, some lawmakers are unsure about rushing into a special session. DeSantis wants it to happen the week of January 27, but it’s still up in the air how the Legislature will respond.

One Republican senator, Don Gaetz, mentioned that it would help if the governor could clarify what he wants to achieve. Otherwise, they might end up with a session that doesn’t accomplish much.

On the flip side, some lawmakers are eager to get started. State Senator Blaise Ingoglia, a DeSantis supporter, believes tackling these issues sooner rather than later is key. He thinks Florida should lead the way on immigration.
