Washington: So, here’s the scoop. Just a couple of weeks before his second inauguration, Donald Trump dropped a bombshell. He announced that he wants to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. He thinks it sounds nice and feels it’s fitting since it’s “ours.”

Now, you might think he’s joking, but nope, he was dead serious. His supporters jumped on the bandwagon right away. Just a day later, Rep. Austin Scott from Georgia was already using the term “Gulf of America” in a Fox Business chat, acting like it was a done deal.

Then, during his inaugural speech, Trump brought it up again. Coincidentally, Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, also called it the “Gulf of America” in an executive order. Not long after, Trump signed an order telling the Interior Department to make this name change official within 30 days.

The next day, Rep. Dan Crenshaw from Texas took to social media, asking Apple to update its maps since they still called it the Gulf of Mexico. It’s all a bit wild, right?

Despite how strange this sounds, the administration is really pushing this idea. The Coast Guard even announced they’d be sending more resources to the “Gulf of America.” This was one of the first times the government officially used Trump’s preferred name, which has drawn some eye-rolls from critics and leaders in Mexico.

When asked about the name change, Coast Guard officials pointed to Trump’s executive order. They probably felt they had no choice, especially after the administration fired Adm. Linda Fagan, the first woman to lead a military branch. So, it makes sense they’d stick to the White House’s lingo.

Who knows if this will catch on? I wouldn’t be shocked if “Gulf of America” becomes one of those phrases that only Republicans use, like “Democrat Party” or “death tax.”
