Trudeau calls out Alberta’s Smith for refusing to back a united tariff response against Trump

Windsor: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is not holding back. He’s criticizing Alberta’s Premier Danielle Smith for her refusal to sign a joint statement on tariffs aimed at countering Donald Trump’s threats.
On Wednesday, Smith announced that Alberta wouldn’t impose tariffs on energy or other exports to the U.S. This came as Trudeau and other premiers were looking to work together on a united front.
Trudeau said he understands Smith’s need to advocate for her industry, but he believes she should also prioritize Canada. He pointed out that all other premiers chose to put the country first.
“What happens to any part of us happens to all of us,” he emphasized, highlighting the importance of a united response. He acknowledged that while it’s natural for premiers to support their regions, they should also think about the bigger picture.
Smith, who attended the meeting virtually while on vacation, stated she would do whatever it takes to protect Albertans from what she calls harmful federal policies. More updates are expected soon.
