Three New Jersey men are on trial for the murder of a bouncer during a 2020 Brooklyn gambling den robbery
The incident happened at an underground gambling spot called the “G Spot” in Brownsville. It turned into chaos, with four people getting shot, including Rodney Maxwell, a 58-year-old security guard and father of three.
Maxwell had just recovered from COVID-19 earlier that year, only to be fatally shot six months later. The accused—Brian Castro, Musah Coward, and Charles Powell—are facing serious charges, and jury selection kicks off soon in Brooklyn Federal Court.
Coward, who allegedly had connections to the area, picked the gambling den as a target and drove the others there. They entered the place in a line, but Maxwell quickly jumped in to stop them.
Things got messy fast. Castro shot Maxwell in the back, but he kept fighting. Powell then shot him again in the chest, which sadly ended Maxwell’s life.
Later, Castro bragged about the robbery while smoking in a car, not realizing his friend was recording him. This led to the police identifying the trio from surveillance footage, resulting in their arrests.
Their lawyers are trying to argue that the killing wasn’t part of a robbery, claiming Castro was just trying to look tough. They’ve also challenged the evidence against them, but it’s a tough case.
