Chapel-en-le-Frith residents are resisting plans to join Greater Manchester, valuing their local identity over potential changes.

Just nine miles away from the hustle and bustle of Manchester, this town is facing a possible merge into the larger authority. The council’s restructuring could mean that places like High Peak might have to join forces with Greater Manchester, but the locals aren’t thrilled about it.
In fact, there’s a Facebook page dedicated to opposing this change. The local MP thinks it’s a no-brainer to join Greater Manchester, but the residents think otherwise. Arthur Carrington, a local, expressed that he feels no connection to the city.
He mentioned that most people around there don’t even visit Manchester. They see it as a big city, while they consider themselves country folk. Arthur believes that merging would just feel wrong, as there’s no real affiliation between the two areas.
He appreciates the mayor, Andy Burnham, but worries that the town would only get the short end of the stick. It’s clear that the people of Chapel-en-le-Frith are passionate about their identity and want to keep it that way.
