Experts recommend the best face masks for long flights to ensure safety and comfort while traveling in 2025
To get the lowdown on the best masks for long flights, I chatted with Dr. Karen Jubanyik from Yale. She says the ideal mask is one you can wear without fiddling with it for the whole flight. It’s a good idea to try out different masks before your trip to see which one feels right.
Dr. Jubanyik suggests N95 and KN95 masks, especially if you’re not fully vaccinated or have health concerns. You can find these masks on sites like WellBefore and Amazon, which offer reliable options. Just keep in mind that they can be a bit itchy and might cause breakouts, especially if you’re rushing through the airport.
If you’re not keen on N95s or KN95s, double masking with a surgical mask and a cloth mask is another option. Make sure the surgical mask fits well, and if it gets wet, toss it. The cloth mask should also be snug and made of multiple layers.
For those fully vaccinated and at low risk, a single well-fitted mask with multiple layers is fine. Just avoid gaiters and masks with valves, as they don’t offer good protection.
Dr. Jubanyik also shared some of her favorite reusable masks for travel. One option is the Under Armour mask, which comes in various sizes and is designed for movement. Another great choice is from FIGS, known for their comfy, breathable masks that match their scrubs.
So, whether you’re flying for business or pleasure, having the right mask can make your journey a lot more comfortable and safe.
