Boulder: Tad Boyle, now in his 31st season as a coach, remembers the legendary Bill McCartney. Back in 1989, Boyle was just starting out after playing at Kansas. He wasn’t coaching yet, but he knew he had to hear McCartney speak whenever he could.

Boyle, like many in Buff Nation, expressed his sadness over McCartney’s recent passing. He recalled how powerful McCartney was as a speaker. Boyle said, “He had an ability to connect with people in a group setting. I’ve never experienced anybody like that in my life.”

Over the years, Boyle has become one of the longest-tenured coaches at CU. He returned to Colorado in 2010, long after McCartney’s glory days, but he still sought out McCartney for advice. Boyle remembered how gracious McCartney was, always willing to share his wisdom on recruiting and building a program.

Boyle emphasized how McCartney taught him the importance of making recruits feel at home in Boulder. He said, “He believed it in his heart, and I believe it in my heart.” That passion for CU is something Boyle has carried into his own coaching.

Women’s basketball assistant Shelley Sheetz also shared her memories of McCartney. She noted how his influence extended throughout the athletic department. She said, “He was just a great guy. The guys loved Coach Mac just like we loved Coach Barry.”

McCartney’s legacy continues to inspire those at CU, and his impact will be felt for years to come.
