A 66-year-old Sunbury man faces charges after leaving a child unattended in a school van for an extended period
Stutzman, who lives on Reagan Street and is also on the Shikellamy School Board, was charged after the child’s parents reported the incident. They said their child wasn’t dropped off at home but was left in the van while Stutzman parked it outside his house.
It gets worse—the police said the van was hot, and the child was stuck inside for quite a while. Stutzman claimed he thought all the kids had gotten off the bus and even checked the van before he parked it. He said he felt terrible about what happened and didn’t mean for it to go down like that.
According to police, the child was banging on the window trying to get Stutzman’s attention while he was mowing the lawn. Eventually, a neighbor found the child and called the parents, who then reported it to the school district.
When police reached out to Stutzman, he said he wasn’t comfortable coming to the station alone. He mentioned he had already talked to his supervisor at Amity Leasing, the company that services the school district, and had faced some discipline for the incident.
Despite everything, Stutzman plans to stay on the school board and fight the charge. He’s set to appear before a district judge soon. It’s a tough situation for everyone involved.
