Orlando: Some Starbucks customers are trying to speed up their coffee runs by using the mobile app while in the drive-thru. But employees say this actually complicates things.

When customers order through the app just before arriving, it can mess up the flow. Baristas have to juggle orders, and sometimes they don’t even see the new order until the customer arrives.

Starbucks has two lines for orders: one for drive-thru and another for in-store or app orders. If you place an order while in line, it might get stuck behind others, making your wait longer.

Baristas are asking customers to be mindful of this. They want to serve everyone quickly, but the current system can make it tricky. CEO Brian Niccol is aware and is looking for ways to improve the process.

He’s mentioned wanting to get orders out in four minutes or less and is working on separating mobile orders from regular ones. Some changes have already helped, like reducing promotions that made things hectic.

Baristas have even suggested a dedicated lane for mobile pickups, similar to what Chipotle has done. This could help speed things up and make the experience better for everyone.
